Maungatatauri Mission 2014

It was great to see people back racing over Maungatautari Mountain again .After overnight rain the day started with a thick layer of fog   ,but as the day progressed ,the weather improved to perfect conditions .

The first cycle started with a roar as usual breaking into several bunches quickly with the hilly course .Suprisingly 3 individuals Olly Shaw ,Simon Vanrossen ,and Sam Clark arrived together at the first transition at the beginning of the mountain run .The mountain run again provided  the most challenging section of the race .The runners were quickly up in the clouds ,climbing some near vertical sections ,to the summit and down the other side .Emerging on the other side ,Olly had managed to pull out a 5 min lead on Sam .Local girl Shanel Cornille was leading the womens field Racheal Cashin in second place had a few mechanical issues with her bike ,and slipped further back .

After the short bike to the Kayak transition ,Olly was suffering from his run ,allowing Sam to move closer ,there was 4 minutes separating the two going into the kayak section .The best ever conditions on the lake ,and some great paddling by Sam saw him cross the finish line with a good win .Next over the line was Elliot Riley ,team Finger Crossed ,then Olly  second individual, followed by individual Jason Derecourt . Shanel was a clear womens winner followed by Racheal in second and Heather Davidson  in third  .There was some great racing in the 2 person adventure race option .Cadence Chicks ,took out the female ,and Cadence Dudes the male section .James Kuegler was also was the fastest on the mountain run section ,in a time of 1 hour 36 minutes  .

Overall a great day  ,competitors and supporters enjoyed the finish at the Boatshed Café ,plenty of food and drink .Looking for a big race next year our 10th anniversary .Results are online .
